DESCRIPTION -The Cedar Grand is a hotel nestled among the picturesque mountain peaks of Shimla. The design scheme for the rooftop restaurant at this property capitalizes upon its immense potential for stunning views. The east façade of the space has floor to ceiling windows across its entire length in order to provide endless panoramas of the overlooking valley.
Despite these clear advantages however, the space had certain challenges including sharp corners as well as a ceiling with varying heights. The challenges have been tackled by dividing the room into 2 distinct, but harmoniously-styled areas – a lighter, more reflective treatment of the area adjoining the windows and a deep-coloured, plush ambience for the deeper half of the room.
The window area has been treated with glossy finishes to maximize the impact of the sunlight streaming in. The white, undulating ceiling design mirrors the mountains and the valleys beyond the window while the seating arrangement in this space has deliberately been kept sparse, but intimate.
On the deeper end of the space is the more luxurious setup, reflected in the lush couches, the springy wall cladding as well as the grand chandeliers. This space, meant for larger gathering of friends and families, forms the ideal backdrop for special evenings.
The focal point of these 2 setups is the mural at the end of the room, inspired by the sun. This prominent feature is brought alive by that fact that it reflects the morning sun into the restaurant during daytime and accentuates the valley view for the rest of the day.
